Terra Nova

The campaign opens some fifty years after the arrival of human society on the earth. Five people set out from the human settlement of New Avalon, with no purpose in their mind but to adventure. Their names and stations:

They depart to the eastern mountains, where, led by what may only be surmised to be divine providence, they stumble upon the long-sealed entrance to the dwarven city of Mzindekhalet, erstwhile capitol of the Underdark.

Session summary:

The party returns in the morning to Commander Rawlings, who greets them uneasily — he didn’t sleep well the night before, having come in contact with the mysterious book the day previous. Nevertheless, he instructs the party to travel north to Mistclyffe, there to investigate rumors of a practicing necromancer.

The trip to Mistclyffe is a two-month journey, comprising of the following:

  • Ten days on horseback from New Avalon to Huntsford
  • Seventeen days on longship from Huntsford to Riverside
  • Fourteen days on longship fron Riverside to Promise
  • Two days on sailing ship from Promise to Larkport
  • Eight days on horseback from Larkport to Rockton
  • Six days on horseback from Rockton to Mistclyffe

The party thus sets out west to Huntsford. En route they have a number of small encounters:

  • The party finds a petrified old man outside a small hamlet, and goes back to the hamlet to inform the residents there.
  • Eustace has a short conversation with a holy man meditating at a shrine to Groetus.
  • An attack from a Sagari which, when cloven in two, splits into two more Sagari that must be fought off. Fire kills them finally.
  • A forlarren posing as a weeping woman, whom the party kills upon its attack.

After ten days on the road, the party arrives at Huntsford as the sun is setting, and are confronted by the gatesman, who tells them to quickly see the Captain of the Guard.

Captain Fitzgerald informs the party that there has been a werewolf attack in the town, and that a citizen lies dead thereby. He charges them to perform their duty as members of the Royal Adventurer’s Guild, and track down the werewolf and kill it.

Session Summary:

The party goes forth at the command of Captain Fitzgerald to find the murderer. They first investigate the crime scene, where they find Achaius Ramson poring over the crime scene, complaining that he cannot use his magic to divine anything. The party finds two pieces of evidence at the scene: a ring (planted by Achaius) which Achaius identifies as belonging to Amethyst Kritchner, and a small candle (used as a spell component to summon the wolf which killed the victim; Achaius neglected to pick it up after the summoning). The party travels to Amethyst’s house, where they meet her lover, Deliah Jameson. The two profess their innocence, and Deliah notes that Amethyst did not own the ring in question; Deliah had purchased it as a surprise gift for her, but had not yet given it to her. This, along with the testimony of James Murdock, a guard who witnessed the attack and claimed that the wolf disappeared into thin air, is enough to lead the party to the house of Achaius, where they place the wizard under arrest. They then go, with James Murdock in tow, to confront Captain Fitzgerald and place him under arrest as well. The Captain and the wizard are placed in jail under the custody of James Murdock, and the party go to bed satisfied.

Session summary:

The party leaves Huntsford in the morning, booking passage on a longship leaded north to Riverside and Promise. A day passes uneventfully, and at night the party disembarks at Davidston, to spend the night. They are greeted by a werewolf who introduces himself as David, son of David, and beseeches them to spend the night in his house, as honored guests, he having heard tell of their actions in Huntsford in defense of Amethyst and Deliah. The party acquiesces.

The party attends that night a wake and a celebration. Previously the town had been under attack by akata; Lion Company happened to be in the area, and bravely hunted the akata to their lair and slew them — an act which cost them two of their number. However, being ignorant of the life cycle of akata, the townsfolk failed to properly dispose of the ten bodies left over from the attack, and they rose to interrupt the celebration, generating yet more akata. The remnants of Lion Company (Richard Mouser, Johann Strauss, Keliah Shinzen) and David and Ansley volunteered to go with the party to find and slay the akata. They did so with minimal damages, although Eustace was bitten and unwittingly suffers from the void death.

Sailing north, Eustace continues his daily study of the page he took from the Book of the Empty Night, which continues to give him occasional bad dreams of a malevolent force. He continues to be afflicted with void death, though he does not recognize the symptoms.

On the fourth night, the party stops in Riverton, where they are asked by an anonymous villager to investigate a small, mist-shrouded mansion that appeared suddenly in the forest. The party goes off to investigate, but don’t get very far within the mansion — they meet with mysterious creatures, in appearance similar to three-eyes, purple-skinned goblins, who appear to know something of the page Eustace carries. When he shows it to them, they rattle off (in Goblin, which Rhin does her best to translate) a rapid-fire deciphering of the contents of the page.

Suitably creeped out, the party begins to bicker about the fate of the page, finding incidentally that it is indestructible by all obvious means. Eventually it is decided to leave the page with Eustace, trusting for now in his better judgement. The party abandons the mysteries of the mansion, and go off to sleep.
